About The Yak Ranch

The Yak Ranch is a beautiful 450 acre ranch located just west of Wildwood Alberta. Solely owned and operated by Jennifer Rath, it’s the largest registered breeder of purebred Tibetan yaks in Canada. The Yak Ranch has been proudly supplying customers across Alberta with delicious grass-fed yak meat since it was established in 2015.

All our their yaks free roam 450 acres of native grassland in the summer and transition to a grass hay for winter feeding months. Their ranch’s mission is to provide their animals with the utmost love, care, and stress-free environment possible.

YAK FACTS:

Yaks originated in the Himalayan regions of Asia and thrive at higher altitudes more than any other mammal. Because of these origins, they deposit fat reserves subcutaneously (below the skin), rather than intramuscularly. This means that pure yak meat does not contain marbling like beef does therefore providing very lean cuts of meat.

The subcutaneous fat also gives yak a much higher proportion of beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids, including a greater ratio of omega 3 fatty acids than other cattle. Tests have also shown that yak meat has higher content of the essential omega 3 fatty acids than beef, pork and poultry. It’s also been tested to show lower cholesterol than beef, pork, poultry, and some fish. Because of adaptions to their climate, yak also have enhanced myoglobin content, giving yak meat the rich red coloring.
